In Nigeria "even though primary education is officially free and compulsory, about 10.5 million of the country’s children aged 5-14 years are not in school. Only 61 percent of 6-11 year-olds regularly attend primary school and only 35.6 percent of children aged 36-59 months receive early childhood education." UNICEF
According to WHO In 2012, 1.7 million deaths in children under five were attributable to the environment. These included 570 000 deaths from respiratory infections, 361 000 deaths from diarrhoea, 270 000 deaths from neonatal conditions, 200 000 deaths from malaria and 200 000 deaths from unintentional injuries.
A few challenges women in Nigeria face lack of empowerment, discrimination, sexual and physical abuse etc.
We try to offer young ladies the possibility to learn a vocation, which can help empower them in the future.

About us

The New Laetare support group is a de facto association founded in 1992 to support the “New Laetare Schools Training Center” in Owerri, Nigeria. Thanks to the financial support of loyal sponsors, the City of Bruges and the Province of West Flanders, the construction and functioning of a kindergarten, a primary and a secondary school became possible. A Day Care Center is also now operational.

A few of our Goals:

  • Supports the further running costs and the didactic equipment of the school;
  • Supports the local school fund for scholarships for underprivileged children;
  • Supports the local social protection initiative for staff members;
  • In consultation with the local partners, set up new projects that benefit the “New Laetare Schools Training Center”;
  • Informs its sympathizers and donors about the current projects and North-South cooperation via a free quarterly contact sheet “Laetare Tijdingen”;
  • Provides material: flyers, DVD 20 years N-S, brochure 25 years N-S collaboration …

Our collaborative project New Laetare Schools in the village of Akwakuma, Nigeria has been in existence since 1991 …

  • A Kindergarten with provisional Day Care Center (from 1992 to 1996)
  • A Primary school (from 1997 to 2007)
  • A Secondary school (from 2008 to 2014)
  • A Day Care Center (from 2015 to 2017)

But more important than the buildings are the people who use them every day. This school year no less than 1060 children have been registered. They represent more than 600 families. 142 teachers and 27 staff have been employed.

The directors and teaching staff provide high-quality education. All employees receive one, according to African standards, socially responsible wages. The training center helps children to develop in a sustainable way, to emancipate people and to give them opportunities to take their future into their own hands. The institution is now also fully integrated into the Nigerian school system and in the hands of the local people.

“Education is the most powerful weapon to make a difference in the world” (Nelson Mandela)

Thanks to our scholarship fund, those in charge of the New Laetare schools can achieve their goal of providing free education to 10% of the number of pupils and free childcare and care for 10% of the children in Day Care. Thanks to the hospitality of those in charge in Nigeria, more than 40 young people or adults from our country have already experienced a work or indulgence period at the “New Laetare Schools Training Center” campus in Akwakuma.

Skeptics who argue that North-South cooperation is ineffective are wrong. Our cooperation, which has only been possible with your support and sympathy, will give a better future for many years and to many people.

“Big rivers need the small streams” (Albert Schweitzer)

We sincerely thank you for the support, small or large. Our thanks also go to the King Baudouin Foundation, those responsible for the North-South policy of West Flanders, the Provincial North-South Center of West Flanders, the Bruges Fund for Development and Cooperation for the many years of support and logistical assistance.

Our On Going Projects

Preventive Health Care

With our cooperation project “Preventive health care” we want to contribute to the realization of one of the 17 sustainability goals that the United Nations has set for the period 2015-2030: “Ensure good health and promote prosperity for all ages”.

We develop a structure in close collaboration with the local partners and organize actions that provide preventive health care for all children of the Training Center.

  • In a systematic manner, all children are examined by a doctor and a nurse free of charge: <6 years at least annually > 6 years at least every 3 years;
  • A written advice is formulated to the parents of each child;
  • Tailor-made sessions on preventive health care are organized within the school;
  • Is being looked at to extend this preventive health care to other schools.

Future Projects

The Hope for Girls Foundation aims to provide additional development opportunities for girls in all areas of life, including education and health. She wishes to improve the situation of the families and communities of which she is a part. The foundation wishes to support projects that provide additional development opportunities for girls (and their families) in the fields of education, health and culture.

Our North-South cooperation “New Laetare Schools Foundation Center” is active in these fields. The Support Group has received a considerable donation to set up innovative initiatives in this area over the next few years in close collaboration with our local partner.

We would like to inform you in our next Laetare Tijdingen…

An examination of one child costs €4. We intend to exam 2500 children over the next three years. To achieve this we need to raise the sum of €10,000.

From previous examinations, we found that 3% of the students require glasses. A pair of glasses costs €60. This means a total of 75 glasses will be necessary, resulting in €4,500.

All donations above €40 benefit from a 45% tax deduction hence a €120 donation (two paires of glasses or examinations for 30 children) will only cost you €66.

We need to raise a grand total of at least €14,500 to ensure the success of our programme within the next three  years. We greatly appreciate each and every donations.

We sincerely welcome, appreciate and thank you for all donations.
